Customer Reviews

Very happy, you can get better only at much higher prices Review by Eugenio
Here is my review of ASUS GL502VMZ (modified by CUK: RAM is 24 GB, 1xSSD 256 GB M.2, 1x1TB SSD).

My requirements.
Gamer-like performances, except for the video card, older models like NVIDIA 960 grant longer time on batteries.
As light as possible, for a 15”.
A “neutral” look (not flashy style of almost all gamers laptops).

The choice.
The ASUS GL502 is the best compromise for my requirements. Pretty much, it’s the younger twin brother of the ASUS ROG models, without the flashy cover, USB-C, and a few things that I don’t need. It’s much lighter than equivalent computers from other brands. There was a nice $150 discount that I used to upgrade the hard drives (I’ll never go back to traditional slow HD).

I’m not a professional tester and my benchmark is probably unusual, but still it’s a test.
As a gamer, my reference is a heavily modded Skyrim (STEP, for those who know the mod package). It runs flawlessly at no less than 60 FPS (if I understand correctly, the modded game is hardcoded at a maximum of 60 FPS)
For my job. I write and run scientific programs written in FORTRAN 90, depending on the application my software can easily have to run for several hours. My reference is a dedicated remote server. The server is a few-years old linux machine with a branded fortran compiler. My laptop is a Windows machine and hosts a linux virtual machine, in addition I use the gfortran compiler. My codes run faster (~35%) on the (old) dedicated server, it’s not disappointing considering that branded compilers are ~30% faster and that I’m using a virtual machine on my laptop.

I’m very happy with my computer. It gives me all the power that I need within a reasonable weight (and price), I would definitely buy it again.
As a gamer I have all I need (I don’t miss “downgrading” from a ROG).
Professionally, I can run all editing and data analysis software without the slightest problem and I have a reliable backup for the dedicated server (when it’s under maintenance or when I cannot access the network).
The two SSDs are not top brand (who says Samsung?) but I cannot say that I miss the extra kick in my everyday computer usage. Perhaps they’ll last less, but probably I’ll change computer before they fail.
Some additional considerations about using professional upgrades. First, they saved my warranty and I didn’t have to deal with one additional disk (the original HD).
