Intel Devils Canyon i7-4790K Benefits and Features:

Intel's Core i7-4790K quad core processor, known as the Devils Canyon, is to be the front runner processor of the Haswell Refresh line and the first 22nm consumer CPU to obtain clock frequency of 4 GHz; including a max boost clockspeed of 4.4 GHz; which is also a new first for Intel. It features 4 cores and 8 threads with a fully unlocked design; allowing users to overclock the chip past its posted limits due to an improved thermal design and updated package materials. The Devils Canyon i7-4790K features an 88W TDP and comes with an HD 4600 graphics chip clocked in at 1250 MHz.

The Intel Devils Canyon i7-4790K represents Intel’s first ever consumer processor with a base frequency of 4 GHz (we have CPUs that turbo this high), but the turbo mode for this processor is actually 4-4-3-2, meaning that at single core loads the user will see 4.4 GHz and at full-core loads it will be 4.2 GHz.

The Devils Canyon i7-4790K won its notoriety for its ability to run all four of its cores at a base of 4.0GHz. Other Intel CPUs only have been able to reach this frequency on one or several cores for very brief periods; which Intel labels as “Turbo Frequency”. But the i7-4790 quad core processor will run consistently at that speed and bang out a turbo frequency up to 4.4GHz.

Existing motherboards will be able to work with new parts with LGA 1150 sockets and either Intel’s Z87 or 9-series chipsets. Makers of motherboards will undoubtedly have to tweak their Z87 boards to accommodate for the new CPUs mostly because the i7-4790 chips' TDP (thermal design profile) moved from 84 to 88 watts.

Intel’s engineers made some packaging changes by adding a huge number of capacitors to deliver smoother power and produced a new thermal solution that would work with existing cooling solutions. This new thermal solution is basically some grease the factory applies to the heat spreader housing the processor.

In an air-cooled system using a heatsink and a fan or a liquid cooling system thats clamped to the CPU, the spreading the grease over the top of the chip's heat spreader it helps to transfer the heat from the chip package to the heatsink or water block to dissipate the heat.

Devils Canyon parts are quad-core CPUs which support eight execution threads, with 8MB of cache.
